For over one hundred and eighty years, Monroe has felt the witness of Christians through the deeds and words of the people called Methodists. In 1824, a small congregation began to meet, and the work done by this congregation has continued for almost two centuries. Now this congregation can look back across the years, and give thanks to those who pioneered the way. We honor those who have gone before us, and pray that the same dedication which led them to service will fill our souls, so that we do not fail our Lord or our brothers and sisters.
Now, with one hundred and eighty years of ministry behind us, we move forward with a strong desire to share what we know about the Lord of life to a new generation. Jesus said, " I have come to set the world on fire..." In his time on earth, he did exactly that; as a result, men and women burned with the passion of concern for the Christian mission. Today, we need to pray one simple prayer: "Set us on fire again, Lord." If we pray for this, he will answer us, and launch us into our next century of ministry. (W. Shelton Eubanks, Jr. in "This Trail of Splendor and Glory")
Our Methodist congregation started in Monroe, Georgia, in 1824. They held their first one-room class and meeting house by 1825. From 1825 to the present day, the Church has had four structures dedicated to the glory of God and the service of ministry, to both its congregation and the local community. Fifty years ago, Bishop Arthur J. Moore dedicated the present structure. The present church has expanded its property adjacent to the church for future ministries, including a large antebellum house which has now become the Adult center for classes, meetings, and celebrations. A new educational facility has recently been completed increasing classrooms and including a larger nursery, which will allow us to pass on the Word of God to the next generation far more efficiently. The fellowship hall has been expanded as well as the creation of a new meeting room on the 2nd floor of the educational building.
